There are some joys

The old professor said:

  • Thank you all for your lively views on the bad habits of the Vietnamese that make foreigners think less of us. Now I'd like to hear you talk about the habits, customs and ways of life of Vietnam that foreigners might find endearing. Again, each opinion gets 45 seconds to give the answer, the cause and how to develop it.
    Here are some representative opinions:
  • Sir, I think Vietnamese Teachers' Day on 20 November, which highlights the spirit of honouring teachers and the Way they teach, is a beautiful feature of Vietnamese culture. The cause is rooted in the nation's moral tradition. To develop it, introduce it to the world to learn from.
  • Filial respect for parents. The cause is that Vietnamese people know how to uphold fundamental morality. To develop it, introduce it to friends around the world.
  • A fervent love of country. The cause is the sacred origin of Âu Lạc. To develop it, everyone should take part in learning and building the country.
  • Generosity at the table: whenever there's something delicious, sharing it. The cause is a strong sense of community. To develop it, treat foreign visitors well.
  • Friends teaching one another so that all study well. The cause is the proverb "Learning from a teacher is not as good as learning from a friend." To develop it, create conditions for classes where students tutor each other.
  • Fear of the karmic consequences of one's actions. The cause is the influence of proverbs such as "Sow the wind and reap the whirlwind" and "Live kindly and good things come to you." To develop it, make the law of cause and effect an official school subject.
  • A very strong village community spirit, especially in the North. The cause is that in the ancient period of Chinese rule, Chinese officials governed at the top and left the Vietnamese to govern themselves in their villages. To develop it, build mutual help in villages and neighbourhoods.
  • Respect for the elderly. The cause is the belief that older people have a lot of life experience and many of the moral teachings of the sages. To develop it, young people should keep courtesy towards their elders.
  • Polite speech, respectful forms of address. The cause is that since ancient times a person's moral character and dignity have been judged by courteous speech. To develop it, teach later generations to understand it so as to preserve it and present it to the world.
  • Tết is very important, joyful, full of affection and sacred. The cause is that it is taken as the day that sets the direction for the whole year. To develop it, preserve affection through the traditional Tết.
  • The custom of worshipping national heroes. The cause is that the Vietnamese regard the homeland as the highest thing. To develop it, ask the religions to teach their followers love of country.
  • Esteem for foreign guests. The cause is that Vietnamese people are naturally hospitable to foreigners. To develop it, help visitors understand more about Vietnamese culture.
  • Vietnamese people do not divide into classes and become friendly with one another easily. The cause is that since ancient times whoever studied well and passed the exams became an official. To develop it, just carry on as we are. 👨‍⚕️

Our country has many fine things that we don't fully understand well enough to make use of. We could set up a cultural tourist area by creating a traditional village. Staff would play the villagers. Visitors would be welcomed and treated with Vietnamese hospitality, served traditional dishes, told about Vietnamese cultural customs, taught traditional Vietnamese martial arts, taught Vietnamese meditation, shown how to pay respects to the deities who are the nation's heroes, and given meaningful souvenirs.
